Do you know according to GO-Gulf.com in their survey on smart phone users in the world 2011, 80% of the world's population now has a mobile phone and 1.08 billion are smart phones.
Out of the total market share for smart phones,
Android hold a 46.9% market share. ( the highest in terms of percentage but don't forget that there are x number of Android phone brands in the market. From Asus to ZTE mobile. You do the calculations )
For IOS, Apple alone captured 28.7% of the total market share. Again, you do your analysis on the popularity of OS.
For RIM, Blackberry hold 16.6% of the market, Microsoft a small portion of 5.2% and symbian the least at 1.5%.
A major issue on the usage of smart phone is the battery life. 89% of smart phones user use their smart phones throughout the day and they faces the same problem, BCNE! (Battery Capacity Not Enough). If you are a smart phone user, ask yourself if you are facing this BCNE or not...
In the survey, it also shows How SP users are using their SP in 2011. Majority used it for text messages. (Nowdays a lot of apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, etc that offers free messaging), 84% used for internet browsing, 76% for emails, etc....
